Biobest involvement in PMWS research for the United Kingdom Pig Industry

Biobests skill and experience as a specialist virology laboratory are being utilised as the industry partner for one of the ten projects in an animal health initiative recently announced by the BBRSC.

Estimated to cost the industry £30m/year Post-weaning multi-systemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) is a very common viral disease of pigs which, although it was identified in the UK only in 1999, has now spread across the country. It has a high mortality rate and causes significant suffering for the animals, with symptoms including wasting, diarrhoea, pneumonia and jaundice. Prof. Dick Werling of the Royal Veterinary College will lead the project working closely with UK pig farmers and with support from the British Pig Executive. The project will identify why the disease occurs and work on ways to control it.
