Rabies serology – direct to your practice
Time is often of the essence when practitioners are preparing customers pets and dogs for travel overseas through the Pet Travel Scheme. The pet owner wants to go on holiday since their dates are booked, and the Vet ends up bearing the brunt of anxious holiday makers as their departure date approaches. After micro-chipping, the animal has to be vaccinated (preferably twice, two weeks apart), with the blood sample taken by the Vet preferably three to four weeks after the booster vaccination. All this means that it is often the case that quick turnaround times for the rabies serology test are vital.
For the first time, the rabies serology test is now available direct from Biobest Diagnostics. Previously such services have only been available as referrals to Biobest through the general veterinary laboratories. Dr David Snodgrass, Managing Director of Biobest, has advised that “speed, price, quality of service and accuracy of results are always the key drivers for a commercial diagnostic laboratory. As Europe’s principal provider of rabies serology tests, we are excited that the introduction of this new ‘direct to practice’ approach from Biobest Diagnostics offers the twin benefits of greatly improving speed of service whilst reducing prices.“
The test procedure is a neutralisation test requiring the use of live rabies virus in a high security laboratory. The reaction time is two days, and results are typically mailed out achieved four working days of receipt.
